About

Bio:

I have been podcasting since 2006, which is when I launched both Brain Science and Books and Ideas. Brain Science is still going strong and actually does generate some income. The goal of the show is to explore how recent discoveries in neuroscience are unraveling the mystery of how our brain makes us human. I interview scientists, philosophers, and other leading thinkers and help them make their work accessible to listeners of all backgrounds.

In June 2020 I released the second edition of my book Are You Sure? The Unconscious Origins of Certainty. (I am happy to send a PDF to anyone looking for a guest for their podcast.)

Books and Ideas has more diverse content, but it is also very pro-science. Especially in the current climate I think it is very important that science be represented in a way that is not only accessible, but in a way that helps nonscientists understand how it it really works.

My newest podcast is Graying Rainbows: Coming Out LGBT+ Later in Life. It is more driven by personal story telling than my other shows, but I also enjoy talking with historians and sharing resources with listeners of all ages. Although my intended demographic is people coming out later in life, the show is also enjoyed by younger people and straight allies of all ages.

My “day job” is working a Palliative Medicine physician at the Birmingham VA Medical Center in Birmingham, AL. I have been a widow since July 2015 and currently live with my Golden Retriever Rusty.

What services do you provide?

I see myself mainly as a physician, podcaster, and writer, but I am available for public speaking about neuroscience and issues effecting LGBT+ Elders.
